BIS CERTIFICATION
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) registration is a voluntary certification scheme in India provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards, which operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. BIS certification is a way to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of products sold in the Indian market. It is particularly relevant for products that are critical to public health, safety, and security.
The BIS certification process involves the following steps:
Product Testing: The manufacturer or supplier needs to get their product tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory as per the relevant Indian Standard (IS). The testing evaluates the product's compliance with the specified quality and safety standards.
Application Submission: After successful testing, the manufacturer or supplier submits the application for BIS certification along with the required documents and test reports.
Factory Inspection: BIS may conduct a factory inspection to ensure that the manufacturing process and quality management system are in line with the prescribed standards.
Grant of License: Upon satisfactory compliance with the standards and factory inspection, BIS grants the BIS certification license to the manufacturer or supplier.
Surveillance: Regular surveillance of the certified product and the manufacturing process may be conducted by BIS to ensure continued compliance with the standards.
The BIS certification is applicable to a wide range of products, including electronic and electrical goods, automotive components, construction materials, household appliances, food products, and more.
It's important to note that BIS certification is not mandatory for all products. Some products are covered under mandatory certification schemes, and it is illegal to sell them without BIS certification. For other products, obtaining BIS certification is a voluntary step taken by manufacturers to demonstrate the quality and conformity of their products to consumers and regulatory authorities.
